The Role of Business and the Virtuous Cycle of Progress in Robert Heinlein’s “Methuselah’s Children”
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II Methuselah’s Children is a pioneering science-fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, remarkable for its favorable treatment of greatly extended lifespans several decades before the era of biotechnology and the advent of the transhumanist and life-extension movements. Moreover, Methuselah’s Children presents important insights regarding the virtuous cycle of improvement that occurs when a business structure is deliberately oriented toward catalyzing both technological progress and increased length and quality of human life. Originally published as a series in the July, August, and September 1941 issues of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, Methuselah’s Children was released as a full-fledged novel in 1958. Exceptionally long-lived humans – the members of the…

Surviving a Carrington Event and Similar Disasters
On 1 September 1859 Richard Carrington observed a series of major coronal mass ejections from the sun – massive solar flares, the largest of which it the Earth’s magnetosphere some 18 hours later (normally it takes around 72 hours). The result was massive auroral displays across the world, even close to equatorial latitudes, and disruption of the telegraph system in a number of nations. Analysis of ice cores suggest that flares of this magnitude occur every 500 years or so. If such an event happened now the consequences would be far more serious. The main problem would be damage to electricity grids worldwide. Such storms can trigger overloads by inducing…

Recent Breakthroughs Reveal Startling Possibility: Water is Everywhere
Author: Ben Davidson In 1986, some scientists laughed as other scientists seriously pondered the existence of water on Mars. Today we know that there is ice, and even the potential for liquid water on the surface of Mars. That news made headlines, especially with the newest rover sending back close-up images and data from direct samples. The vast majority of relevant and more-surprising information on the topic of extraplanetary water has managed to go under the radar. Additionally, breakthroughs in extreme-environment chemistry, astronomy, physics, and more have not yet been expressly interconnected to draw new hypothetical inferences about the nature of the universe, and the abundance of life. In STARWATER,…
