As a response to the Soviet threat of a supersonic nuclear bomber, the UK built a combined rocket & jet engined fighter that was on track to become the standard NATO interceptor for Europe. But in a turn of events that would worthy of a cold war espionage novel, it was pushed out of the way by the UK & US governments and a hostile rival.
