MOSFET – The Most significant invention of the 20th Century
What makes a truly world-changing invention?. Of all the inventions of the 20th century, just one could be said to have changed the world in such a way that it touches virtually everybody on the planet’s lives on a daily basis. It has enabled the most rapid development in technology in history and yet you can’t see the vast majority of them directly and their individual job is just to switch on and off. This is the story of the MOSFET and how it changed the world. Guest AuthorAll Guest Author Posts are submitted or additional content Wave Chronicle has added to the website. SkyLab – Maybe the Most Important Space Programs So Far
It was plagued with problems from the start but it turned out to be one of the most important influential space programs we have ever done. Skylab unintentionally showed us that we could fix major unexpected problems working in space and that we could survive in space for long periods of time and paved the way for the ISS. This is the story of Skylab, the first and so far only US space station. How NASA’s New Spacesuit Could Stall the 2024 Artemis Moon Landings
NASA is due to return to the moon in 2024 but before they can do that they will need the new spacesuits which they have been developing for 14 years, trouble is it looks like that’s not going to happen. In this video, we look at NASA’s spacesuit from Apollo to the ISS and why they need a new one, and why that causing such a problem. How Did Apollo Avoid a Radiation Disaster?
Neil Armstrong’s biggest fear about the Apollo missions was a solar occurring during the mission and although none of the missions was affected by such an event they were lucky through timing rather than anything else. This video looks at what might have happened if they might not have been so lucky and how we are trying to mitigate such effects happening on the upcoming Artemis lunar program in 2024. The Wild Weasels – When Electronic Warfare Became Real
In many ways, the story of the Wild Weasels is the story of the beginnings of electronic warfare between the radar crew on the ground and the weasels in the air. This was also the first time that electronics had been used to find targets actively during a mission rather than predetermined beforehand, and of course, this was matched only by the bravery of the men required to fly down a radar beam and put the site out of action before the missile got them. How to Communicate Across the Quantum Multiverse
In the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, the universal wavefunction is the reality, encompassing all possible histories and futures and all exist. But we are only sensitive to a slice of the wavefunction corresponding to our “world”, and due to the superposition principle, our world can happily do its thing unperturbed by other parts of the wavefunction – other “ripples,” or worlds. And while it may seem like it would be physically impossible to have any connection between worlds, it may turn out to be entirely possible to communicate between them. How Magnetism Shapes The Universe
Sign Up on Patreon to get access to the Space-Time Discord! https://www.patreon.com/pbsspacetime Many Worlds’ interpretation of quantum mechanics proposes that every time a quantum event gets decided, the universe splits so that every possible outcome really does occur. How Quantum Entanglement Creates Entropy
Sign Up on Patreon to get access to the Space-Time Discord! https://www.patreon.com/pbsspacetime Entropy is surely one of the most perplexing concepts in physics. It’s variously described as a measure of a system’s disorder – or as the amount of useful work that you can get from it – or as the information hidden by the system. Despite the seeming ambiguity in its definition, many physicists hold entropy to be behind one of the most fundamental laws of physics. Can Space Be Infinitely Divided?
Sign Up on Patreon to get access to the Space-Time Discord! https://www.patreon.com/pbsspacetime How many times can I half the distance between my hands? Assume perfect coordination and the ability to localize my palms to the quantum level. 15 halvings get them to within a cell’s width. 33 to within a single atom, 50, and they’re a proton’s width apart. Half the distance 115 times and they’re a single Planck-length apart – 1.6×10^-35 meters. Surely we can keep going – .8, .4, .2 x10^-35 m? Bizarrely, those distances might not even exist in any meaningful way. Check out the Space-Time Merch Store https://www.pbsspacetime.com/shop Sign up for the mailing list to get…
