Observe@MIT is a series of astronomical observation sessions led by astronomer and planetary science lecturer Amanda Bosh. Members of the MIT community are encouraged to come and observe the sky above and learn about space and what there is to see on that particular day or night. Presidential Powers 2: Crash Course Government and Politics
This week Craig continues our conversation on presidential powers by looking at those NOT found in the Constitution – implied or inherent powers. We’ll talk about how the president uses his or her power to negotiate executive agreements, recommend legislative initiatives, instate executive orders, impound funds, and claim executive privilege in order to get things done. Implied powers are kind of tough to tack down, as they aren’t really powers until they’re asserted, but once the they are, most subsequent presidents chose not to give them up. Electric Currents Create Cosmic Magnetic Fields – Thunderbolts Project
Scientists in Germany using the Hubble space telescope have detected extremely strong magnetic fields in a quasar which is said to be about 4 billion light years from Earth. The magnetic fields were measured at 200 million Gauss. In comparison, the strength of the magnetic field at Earth’s surface is only about one Gauss. The scientists state that the magnetic fields are very close to the quasar’s theoretical, central black hole. However, how confident should astrophysicists be in their ideas about cosmic magnetic fields, or their belief in the existence of black holes?
