Impacts of Indefinite Life Extension: Answers to Common Questions
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II, Editor-in-Chief, The Rational Argumentator, Chief Executive, Nevada Transhumanist Party, Author, Death is Wrong As a proponent of attaining indefinite human longevity through the progress of medical science and technology, I am frequently asked to address key questions about the effects that indefinite life extension would have on human incentives, behaviors, and societies. Here, I offer my outlook on what some of these impacts would be. What would be the benefits of life extension? (1) The greatest benefit of life extension is the continued existence of the individual who remains alive. Each individual â apart from the worst criminals â has incalculable moral value and is a universe of ideas, experiences, emotions,…

Refuting Ayn Randâs âImmortal Robotâ Argument – G. Stolyarov II
Here I refute an argument that has been leveled against proponents of indefinite human longevity from a surprising direction â those sympathetic to the Objectivist philosophy of Ayn Rand. Some advocates of Ayn Randâs philosophy believe that indefinite life would turn human beings into âimmortal, indestructible robotsâ that, according to Ayn Rand, would have no genuine values. Both of these claims are false. Indefinite life would not turn humans into indestructible robots, nor would an indestructible robot with human abilities lack values or motivation for doing great things. In Ayn Randâs own words, âAchieving life is not the equivalent of avoiding death.â (John Galtâs speech in For the New Intellectual, p. 135)…

The Imperative of Technological Progress: Why Stagnation Will Necessarily Lead to Disaster and How Techno-Optimism Can Overcome It
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II âHe who moves not forward, goes backward.â ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe It is both practically desirable and morally imperative for individuals and institutions in the so-called âdevelopedâ world to strive for a major acceleration of technological progress within the proximate future. Such technological progress can produce radical abundance and unparalleled improvements in both length and quality of life â whose possibilities Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler outlined in their 2012 book Abundance: The Future is Better Than You Think. Moreover, major technological progress is the only way to overcome a devastating step backward in human civilization, which will occur if the protectionist tendencies and pressures…

Over 1,000 Kids Will Indeed Be Taught That Death is Wrong – The Rational Argumentator
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II At least 1,029 children in at least 14 countries will be taught that death is wrong as a result of the successful provision of Death is Wrong books to 50 longevity activists throughout the world. On August 7, 2014, the last book shipment, free for all recipients, was made, paid for by the funds raised through the Indiegogo campaign I ran in coordination with the Movement for Indefinite Life Extension (MILE) from February 22 through April 23, 2014. (Read Eric Schulkeâs earlier article about the success of the fundraiser and the tremendous efforts and publicity that made it possible.) While some of my critics, such as…

LEV: The Game â Play to Win Indefinite Life
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II LEV: The Game is a work in progress, whose potential to spread the message of indefinite life extension to the general public encourages me greatly. Developed by a team from Belgium â consisting of Anthony Lamot, Mathieu Hinderyckx, and Maxime Devos â this Android mobile game is currently in its Alpha phase. The creators have initiated an Indiegogo fundraiser to raise 6000 Euros (approximately 8100 US dollars at July 2014 exchange rates) in order to greatly expand the game and add its most complex and engaging elements. You can watch their video introduction to the game and the fundraiser here. The premise of LEV: The Game…

Spreading the Word That Death is Wrong – The Rational Argumentator
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II Who could have thought a month ago that an illustrated childrenâs book on indefinite life extension would become a fiercely, passionately discussed phenomenon not just in transhumanist and futurist circles, but on mainstream publications and forums? And yet that is exactly what has happened to Death is Wrong â certainly the most influential and provocative of all of my endeavors to date. I am thrilled that it is precisely my pursuit of this most fundamental and precious goal â preservation of the life of every innocent individual â that has achieved greater public exposure, controversy included, than anything else I have ever done. Our Indiegogo fundraiser…

Transhumanism and Mind Uploading Are Not the Same
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II In what is perhaps the most absurd attack on transhumanism to date, Mike Adams of NaturalNews.com equates this broad philosophy and movement with âthe entire idea that you can âupload your mind to a computerââ and further posits that the only kind of possible mind uploading is the destructive kind, where the original, biological organism ceases to exist. Adams goes so far as calling transhumanism a âdeath cult much like the infamous Heavenâs Gate cult led by Marshal Applewhite.â I will not devote this essay to refuting any of Adamsâs arguments against destructive mind uploading, because no serious transhumanist thinker of whom I am aware endorses…

Why I Wrote a Childrenâs Book on Indefinite Life Extension
Author: Gennady Stolyarov II My greatest fear about the future is not of technology running out of control or posing existential risks to humankind. Rather, my greatest fear is that, in the year 2045, I will be 58 years old and already marked by notable signs of senescence, sitting at the kitchen table, drinking my morning coffee, and wondering, âWhat happened to that Singularity we were promised by now? Why did it not come to pass? Why does the world of 2045 look pretty much like the world of 2013, with only a few cosmetic differences?â My greatest fear is that, as I stare into that mug of coffee, I…
