Five Advanced Space Drives
I recently talked about some of the most habitable exoplanets which unfortunately we’ll never be able to reach because our technology can’t do it. But there are some very interesting concepts being developed that could change all that – if they work. Want to support the channel? The 5 Most Earth-Like Planets We’ve Found So Far
The number of known exoplanets seems to grow every day. Most of them are worlds completely unlike our own. But some get pretty close to something resembling home – and may someday become exactly that. Here’s the link to all those different planet-finding methods: https://www.planetary.org/explore/spa… Want to support the channel? Was There An Advanced Civilization Before Humans?
It took humans 10,000 years to go from hunter-gatherers to world domination. Considering the vastness of time that humans and life have been on Earth, could this have happened once before? This question was put forth by Adam Frank and Gavin Schmidt in their paper titled The Silurian Hypothesis, where they tried to figure out what in the geologic record would be a sign of a previous industrial civilization. It brings up a lot of questions and makes you deal with the weight of deep time, as well as the fleeting nature of history. Want to support the channel? We Still Don’t Know What’s Inside Earth’s Core
We’ve never been able to journey to the center of the Earth, but thanks to an incredibly innovative experiment, we may not have to go there to understand what it’s like. Historically, we’ve explored our planet’s interior using seismic measurements—basically, measuring vibrations that pass through the Earth to tell us more about what’s going on in there. Thanks to research like this we know the Earth has an innermost, super dense solid core, surrounded by a less dense, liquid outer core But now, an exciting new experiment tells us details about the Earth’s core that we’ve never had access to before by using something called a diamond anvil cell, two…

Unravelling the Strange Mysteries of Mars’ Magnetic Field
Thanks to data from NASA’s MAVEN satellite, researchers have created the very first detailed map of the electric currents responsible for shaping the magnetic field that wraps around Mars. Researchers at the University of Colorado, Boulder have created the very first detailed map of the electric currents responsible for shaping the magnetic field that wraps around Mars, and the resulting visualizations can provide clues as to how we can maybe make this inhospitable planet, hospitable. Unlike Earth, Mars doesn’t have an intrinsic magnetic field to stop charged particles from stripping away its atmosphere, nor does it have global magnetic field to protect it from the rigors of space weather. The…

Future Batteries Could Be Made out of Viruses
We’re now using viruses to make batteries…like the kind you could use in your car. So, how does that work and how close are we to a virus-powered car? After recognizing that we have the ability to insert information into a virus’ genome to make stuff, a pioneering team at MIT is using viruses for their own devices. The team is working with the M13 bacteriophage, which is a kind of virus that only infects bacteria, and whose circular genome is relatively simple and is easy to manipulate. Scientists expose batches of this virus to the material they want it to latch onto, like a specific kind of metal. Then,…

What Does Race Have to Do With COVID-19?
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, communities of color have been — and continue to be — hit disproportionately hard. Let’s talk about why. When it comes to the racial health disparities that have emerged throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, some have postulated that genetics are the underlying cause. But the data indicates that something else is at play. If we take the U.S. as an example, 13% of the country’s population is Black, but Black people make up 24% of deaths from COVID— that means that Black people in the U.S. are dying at a rate that’s roughly double their population share. So, what accounts for the massive racial…

Can Viruses Travel Between Planets?
With the global pandemic of COVID 19 still encompassing the word, we are generally not big fans of viruses right now. But we sure are thinking about them a lot. That’s right, even astrophysicists are pondering these bizarre little critters. In fact, astrovirology, although very new, is actually an emerging subfield of astrobiology. And that’s because it turns out viruses don’t just influence organisms – they’re incredibly important on a planetary scale. Perhaps an interplanetary scale. Does Gravity Require Extra Dimensions?
It’s been 120 years since Henry Cavendish measured the gravitational constant with a pair of lead balls suspended by a wire. The fundamental nature of gravity still eludes our best minds – but those secrets may be revealed by turning back to the Cavendish experiment. That steampunk contraption may even reveal the existence of extra dimensions of space. Mapping the Multiverse
This is a map of the multiverse. Or in physics-ese, it’s the maximally extended Penrose diagram of a Kerr spacetime. And in English: when you solve Einstein’s equations of general relativity for a rotating black hole, the universe does not come to an abrupt halt at the bottom of the gravitational pit. Instead, a path can be traced out again but you do not end up in the universe that you started in. As I said, it’s a map of the multiverse.
