Changing The Game By Linking Nuclear & Renewable Energy Systems
Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Nuclear and renewable technologies are crucial parts of the United States’ energy system, providing clean, secure, abundant power. Nuclear energy is the largest zero carbon electricity source on the grid today, while renewable energy is the fastest growing form of any electricity source over the last two years. But, like chocolate and peanut butter, the question is — can these two great technologies be even better together? To help answer this question, the Department of Energy is examining the benefits and potential synergies of energy systems that feature both nuclear and renewable technologies. First, let’s briefly explain what an integrated energy system is.…

Time Is Right For LIBOR Alternative
Office Of Financial Research – Office Of The Director Richard Berner LIBOR is not just an interest rate. It is an interest rate benchmark, or reference rate, one that plays a central role in financial markets and our economy. But there are doubts about LIBOR’s reliability, prompting the Federal Reserve and the Office of Financial Research (OFR) to work with other agencies and market participants to devise a reliable, widely accepted alternative. Formerly the London Interbank Offered Rate and now ICE LIBOR (Intercontinental Exchange LIBOR), this reference rate reflects large banks’ general cost of unsecured wholesale funding — that is, their borrowing not backed by collateral. Just how central is…

Helping Eagles Coexist With Wind Energy Deployment
Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Building energy infrastructure that keeps wildlife safe is a key concern at the U.S. Department of Energy, which is why we have funded six teams to improve technologies that will protect eagles sharing airspace with wind turbines. More than $3 million has been allocated across the six teams for groundbreaking, critical eagle-impact minimization technology research, development, and demonstration projects. The research supported by this funding will provide wind plant owner-operators with viable and cost-effective tools for reducing potential impacts to eagles at wind farms. This important research builds on the Energy Department’s work to enable wind power deployment and ensure coexistence with wildlife…

Join The Collegiate Wind Competition
US Government News Watcher It’s an exciting time to be part of the wind energy industry. Wind is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy sources in the United States, and it has the potential to support hundreds of thousands of jobs in the near future. Since 2014, passionate college students from across the country have learned the ins and outs of the wind industry by participating in the Energy Department’s Collegiate Wind Competition, which challenges undergraduates to design and build a wind turbine and develop a business plan to market their project. This enriching, year-long experience has resulted in nearly 30 teams taking a wind turbine project from concept…

Pluto’s X-Rays Baffle Scientists
In Part 3 of this four-part presentation, physicist Eugene Bagashov continues his analysis of the New Horizons mission to the dwarf planet Pluto. In the Plutonian system, one of the great surprises for planetary scientists was the Chandra observatory’s detection of X-rays from Pluto. This is only one of several phenomena at the planet that have sometimes drawn the analogy of Pluto to a comet. In the Electric Universe Theory as developed by physicist Wal Thornhill, any body on a significantly elliptical orbit can display comet-like characteristics. Today, Eugene offers his own thoughts on this and other surprises from Pluto, including the mysterious behavior of the Plutonian atmosphere. Part One,…

Can We Sleep On Demand?
http://www.weforum.org/ Inadequate sleep is related to a wide range of problems, from depression to obesity. Dan Yang, Professor of Neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley, discusses our increasing understanding of the neuronal circuits involved in sleep: one day, it could become possible to control these circuits, creating “sleep on demand”. The Sun’s Influence on Consciousness | Electricity of Life
Alexander Chizevsky was likely the first to catalog a cyclical relationship between solar activity and cultural “upsets” or advancements. Outbursts of both creative or destructive excitement, depending on the socio-cultural conditions which had been building, appeared to facilitate artistic revolutions and bloody revolutions from tyranny alike. This episode introduces the community to his work, and some of the many effects found by other scientists, which ought to open one’s mind to exploring such a hypothesis. Perhaps channels like Suspicious0bservers will one day help forecast health states of physiology and psychology, helping us to hold better empathy for each other, knowing: “It’s almost that time of the solar cycle!” LINKS: “Effects…
